What is the School's philosophy?

y, Country Day prepares students both academically and socially as they progress from Pre-Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. By the time they graduate, students are ready for the transition to either the independent or public school arena.
How did Country Day begin?
Country Day was founded in 1948 by a group of parents who were seeking an independent school in the Fox Chapel area with excellent educational opportunities for their children.
How much time do the children spend outdoors?
The children enjoy a generous amount of time in the outdoor surroundings. Our wooded campus is used by the faculty as an integral part of the extended classroom. Classes in reading, math, science, music, and art may be taken outdoors when appropriate. Additionally, as long as the weather cooperates, the children in all grades spend two recess periods per day outside.
What are the grade levels at Country Day?
The school offers classes for junior pre-kindergarten (three-year-old children) through fifth grade.
What time do the children come to school each day?
The students are asked to arrive at 8:00am, and classes begin at 8:15am.
What is the average class size?
In the junior pre-kindergarten class, there is a limit of seven children with two teachers. In senior pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, there are two teachers and a limit of eighteen students. In all other grades the limit is eighteen. The average class size varies from year to year.
Do you offer an After-School Program?
Country Day has an after-school program from 3:30pm to 5:30pm every full day that school is in session .The afternoon is designed to allow time for the children to play, to work on class assignments, to interact with teachers, and to have fun with their friends. The rate is $20 per day.
What is your discipline policy?
Teachers and parents work together with a positive approach to discipline, teaching students responsibility for themselves, their classmates and their environment. They also implement strategies from the Responsive Classroom starting with the junior pre-kindergarten students.
Does Country Day teach a foreign language?
Yes, Spanish is taught from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Do the children get regular exercise during the school day?
In addition to two recess periods each day, the children have three periods of Physical Education each week.
What school districts are represented at Country Day?
Students attend FCCDS from surrounding school districts: Fox Chapel Area, Hampton, Shaler, North Allegheny, Penn Hills, Butler, and Pittsburgh City Schools.
Is transportation available for my child?
In addition to carpooling, busing is available to all children in kindergarten and the grades who reside in the Fox Chapel Area School District. Busing is also available through other school districts if those districts offer transportation to their residents, and if the distance requirement is met. Requests for bus transportation are handled through the office.
Is Country Day affiliated with Christ Church Fox Chapel?
Country Day is not affiliated with the Church. However, the whole community gets together on Thursday mornings to sing, hear stories, and share a common experience.
